Cinnamon

What is it?

Cinnamon is the bark from the cinnamon tree that is dried and rolled. Most popularly sold in the spice aisle of your grocery in its two most popular forms, rolled cinnamon sticks or powder. The most common type of cinnamon is Ceylon, which can more often be used for sweeter things. Cinnamon has a spicy warming taste, even though it is also known as a sweeter spice. Add cinnamon to sugar to help amplify the sweetness to bring a warm feeling to desserts.

How to use it

Most often used in desserts, like cinnamon rolls, monkey bread, and snickerdoodles but that isn’t the only category cinnamon fits in. Add it to tea and cider for a warm and spicy hint of flavor to every sip. Put in oatmeal or on toast for a delicious breakfast. While you may think that you can only use cinnamon for sweets, you can use it in various savory Mediterranean or Indian dishes.

Fun fact

Historically, cinnamon has been known to be medicinal and can help to regulate one’s sugar metabolism.
