Croque Monsieur

What do you get when you slather a ham sandwich with a Dijon bechamel sauce and gruyere cheese? This sandwich! If you’ve never heard of it before, it may sound odd but it’s a classic French sandwich and it’s incredible! Also, if you serve it with a fried egg on top you have a Croque Madame!

Ingredients

Sauce
 2 tbsp (28 g) butter
 2 tbsp (16 g) flour
 1 cup (240 ml) milk
 2 tsp (11 g) Dijon mustard
 ¼ tsp salt
 ¼ tsp pepper
 Pinch nutmeg
Ingredients
 2 tbsp (28 g) butter
 4 slices brioche bread
 12 slices ham
 ½ cup (121 g) shredded Gruyere cheese, divided

Directions

In a small saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Whisk in the flour, stirring continuously for 2 minutes. Gradually add in the milk, stirring after each addition. Add the mustard, salt, pepper, and nutmeg, stirring until combined. Set aside.

Preheat the air fryer to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C).

Butter one side of each slice of bread. Layer the sandwiches butter side down, six slices of ham, 2 tablespoons of bechamel, and 2 tablespoons of gruyere. Top with a slice of bread, and secure with a toothpick. Place in the air fryer and cook for 3-5 minutes, or until the bread is slightly browned, flipping halfway through.

Carefully top each sandwich with 2 more tablespoons of bechamel and 2 more tablespoons of gruyere. Return to the air fryer and cook for 3-5 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbling and browned in some areas. Slice and serve.
