How to Save Money on Groceries

Ashley Horst

Groceries can get expensive. And let’s face it; it’s not an expense you can avoid. However, there are ways to get the most for your money. You can coupon, plan ahead, shop discount stores, and hunt for deals. When you shop right you can save big!

Maximize Coupons

When you only use coupons here are there, you may save a couple dollars. However, if you use coupons to their max capacity the savings will add up. If you want to maximize couponing, you need to be familiar with the words “double, manufacturer coupon, store coupon, and stacking.” A double coupon will allow you to double the discount on any coupon that doesn’t have a disclaimer saying otherwise. These are usually offered by a store.  This is not the same as stacking, which is when you use one manufacturer coupon and one store coupon on the same product. Many stores allow this, unless it says otherwise in the coupon policy. However, keep in mind this stacking applies to one manufacturer coupon with one store coupon (not two manufacturer coupons or two store coupons etc). You can look on the coupon to see what type it is. And if you have any questions about the store’s policy, you can look on their website or talk to customer service.

Plan Ahead

If you plan ahead, you are likely to increase your savings. This means checking store flyers to use your coupons on items that are on sale. You can also plan your meals in advance so you buy less of the last minute unnecessary items. Or even freeze meals in advance so you have quick and easy fixes to avoid the fast food runs (when you don’t have time to cook).

Download Store Apps

Many stores have their own apps, which means more deals and coupons. You can easily look through store flyers and send coupons directly to your store card.

Shop Discount Stores

Shop discount stores for extra bargains. Ask around or search online to see if there are any discount grocery stores in your area. These may have closeouts from other grocery stores that allow you to get products at an incredible price. However, always make sure to check expiration dates. PS. Some discount stores will accept coupons, so don’t be afraid to ask.

Be a Deal Hunter

Keep a look out for a good deal. You can always buy ahead if it’s a product you know you’ll use and it has a good shelf life. If you have the space, stocking up isn’t a bad idea. As long as they’re products that you’ll use, and not items that you’ll eventually throw out.

Save big on your groceries by shopping smart. With a little patience and know how, you can fatten your wallet by reducing your monthly grocery costs.
