This is a very simple recipe that only takes a few minutes of preparation. However, the cook time will be about eight hours. You only need three ingredients to make it: water, steel cut oats, and salt. However, if you want a creamier version, you may want to substitute ½ cup of water with milk or cream.

This recipe makes four servings. It can be altered in various ways to make numerous flavors. Try some of the suggestions offered in the second step on the recipe page. Some of these recommendations include fruits like blueberries or bananas. You may also want to add honey, cinnamon, brown sugar, flaxseed or walnuts.

Oatmeal is a very healthy breakfast option. Oats have antioxidants and contain soluble fiber. It will help you feel fuller longer, and it assists in promoting a healthy, nutrient enriched lifestyle. This is especially true when you add a variety of toppings to the mix like berries, nuts or flaxseed. Flax is an excellent source of fiber and it has omega-3s which is a beneficial fatty acid.

This meal is hearty, healthy, and convenient. Take a few minutes to prepare your ingredients in the crockpot. Allow it to cook for four hours as directed. Set alarm to wake up in four hours and stir. If you don’t do this step and prefer to sleep the whole night, it will be fine. It may just be a little more difficult at cleanup, as the oatmeal can stick to the sides.

Overall this recipe has a lot going for it. You can create your own flavors. It’s easy, healthy, and allows for some creativity. This makes for an ultimate breakfast treat.

Instructions

  1. Put water and oats and salt in a crock-pot on low overnight (about 8 hours). Try to get up around 4 hours and stir the oatmeal. If you forget or miss the 4 hour mark, it's ok. It may stick to the sides a bit if you don't stir it, but it will still work and be so creamy. This is my favorite way to eat oatmeal because it comes out so creamy. It tastes like you actually put cream in it! Whole grains require about a 2 hour soak in liquid if you want to release the "germ" inside naturally. So making steel cut oats in a crock-pot is so easy and makes sense as to why it comes out so creamy.
  2. This bowl has 1 tsp coconut oil, 1 tbs of raw honey, and a 1/2 cup blueberries in it. Here are some other topping combinations that taste really good in this. Bananas, toasted walnuts, cinnamon, brown sugar. Tastes like banana nut bread. Ground flax seed, honey, slivered almonds, and raisins. Power oatmeal....lots of energy foods here. Milk (or cream), brown sugar, butter. This one just reminds me of growing up. Chopped apples, sprinkle of cinnamon, sprinkle of nutmeg, brown sugar. Tastes like apple pie...yum! The combos are endless. Put your your own favorite things on there and be confident that you are having a healthy breakfast that is also fast!
